'Worse than a slap in the face': 9/11 families blast Donald Trump's Saudi-backed golf event

Image
Family members of the victims who were killed in the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001 released a new ad on Thursday blasting former President Donald Trump for falsely claiming that the perpetrators remain at large. "Nobody's gotten to the bottom of 9/11, unfortunately, and they should have, as to the maniacs that did that horrible thing to our city, to our country, to the world, so nobody's really been there," Trump told an ESPN reporter when asked if hosting the LIV Golf Tournament sponsored by the Saudi Sovereign Wealth Fund at his Bedminster, New Jersey resort is tone deaf. Jon Stewart shreds Republican 'hypocrites' for filibustering veterans health bill

Comedian Jon Stewart appeared on the right-wing media outlet Newsmax on Thursday and shredded the Republican Party's blockage of a United States Senate Veterans Affairs Committee bill to provide health care to veterans who were exposed to poisonous substances while serving overseas. The filibuster of the Honoring Our Promise to Address Comprehensive Toxics Act (PACT) was led by retiring Senator Pat Toomey (R-Pennsylvania). Twitter viciously mocks Josh Hawley's 'Manhood' book

Less than a week after being labeled a national " laughingstock " after the Jan. 6 select committee showed video of Sen. Josh Hawley looking like a "fleeing coward," the Missouri Republican is once again the butt of jokes online. "Missouri U.S. Sen. Josh Hawley is writing a book called “Manhood: The Masculine Virtues Americans Need,” building off a speech he gave at a conservative conference claiming the political left is waging a war on masculinity," the Kansas City Star reported Thursday. "Hawley’s focus on masculinity comes at a time where politicians have leaned into stunts displaying performative masculinity, like shooting guns and carrying blowtorches." The book is available for pre-order for $29.99. The newspaper reported Hawley "will be speaking at the Stronger Men’s Conference — which features things like monster trucks — a few weeks before the book goes on sale." Susan Collins under fire for threatening to tank marriage rights bill

Image
U.S. Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) is under fire after threatening bipartisan support of legislation to protect same-sex marriage because Democrats were finally able to put together a historic tax and climate change bill – a huge win for Democrats, the Biden administration, and Americans. “I just think the timing could not have been worse and it came totally out of the blue,” Senator Collins told HuffPost Thursday. The news outlet’s Jonathan Nicholson reports her remarks were focused on “Senate Democrats’ unveiling of their bill to raise taxes on some companies, boost IRS enforcement and spend the resulting money to fund anti-climate change efforts .” HuffPost adds that “Collins warned that the manner in which that victory was secured, where it appeared Democrats kept Manchin and Schumer’s negotiations under wraps until a separate bipartisan computer chip production incentive bill was passed by the Senate, hurt the effort to gather support among Republicans to bring the gay marria

Robert Reich debunks inflation myths

Image
Former United States Secretary of Labor Robert Reich on Thursday dismantled several of the most pervasive myths about economic inflation. Reich's argument was based on four points. 1. Wage increases are not the cause: Although wages have been rising, they’ve been rising more SLOWLY than prices. Hourly wages grew by 5 percent in the past year — but prices rose 8.6 percent . This means, when you adjust for inflation, workers actually got a 3.5 percent pay cut over the past year. READ MORE: Centrist Democrats are obstructing raising taxes on the rich | Opinion 2. Corporate greed is at the heart of inflation Corporations are raising prices above what’s needed to cover their higher costs. These mark-ups have soared . Corporations are getting away with this price gouging because they face little to no competition. And they’re using the specter of inflation as a cover. Last year, corporations raked in their highest profits in 70 years. One recent study found that o ver half t

Clarence Thomas ditches plans to teach at GWU due to Roe backlash

Image
On Wednesday, The Associated Press reported that Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas is canceling plans to teach a seminar at George Washington University, after outrage and widespread protests from students. "Thomas, 74, has taught at the private school since 2011," said the report. "He was supposed to lead the seminar with Judge Gregory Maggs of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces. Maggs once served as a Supreme Court clerk to Thomas." "Thomas was part of the conservative majority that in late June overturned the Roe v. Wade decision that guaranteed the constitutional right to abortion," said the report. "In the following days, thousands of students signed a petition calling for the school to sever its relationship with Thomas. But university officials refused." According to the report, Maggs will still teach the course. In recent weeks, the justices involved in the abortion case have been inundated with protests, including

AR-15 manufacturer: Mass shootings are 'evil,' but what about the welfare of guns?

Image
The CEO of an AR-15 manufacturing company testified on Wednesday that mass shootings are "pure evil" -- but he said that it was the future of assault-style rifles that really "concerned" him. In his opening remarks to the House Oversight Committee, Daniel Defense CEO Marty Daniel began by acknowledging that mass shootings like the one at a school in Uvalde, Texas were "evil acts." "I am concerned, however, that the stated implied purpose of this hearing is to vilify, blame and try to ban over 24 million sporting rifles already in circulation that are lawfully possessed and commonly used by millions of Americans to protect their homes and loved ones," the CEO said, "to safely sport shoot with family and friends and to put food on the table as licensed hunters." He added: "I believe in God and my faith guides me and my family. Fundamentally, I also believe there is good and evil in our lives and what we saw in Uvalde, Buffalo an

'Prove it': Ron DeSantis hammered for false allegation about teachers

Image
Florida GOP Governor Ron DeSantis , continuing his months-long, fear-based attack on the LGBTQ community , appears to be claiming that elementary school teachers are “instructed” to tell children they they might be transgender, and insisting if anyone dares to disagree with him, they are “lying.” His claim, which appears in a clip posted by The Recount , is drawing massive outrage on social media. “This will be for elementary school kids, where they’re instructed to tell them, ‘You may have been born a boy, that may have been what you said, but maybe you’re really a girl.’ That’s wrong. 'Congress should be ashamed': Liberals blast Senate subsidies for tech giants

Image
The U.S. Senate on Wednesday passed sweeping bipartisan legislation that Sen. Bernie Sanders and progressive advocacy groups decried as a massive giveaway to corporations such as Intel, whose CEO has been lobbying aggressively in support of the bill's subsidies for the profitable microchip industry. Known as the Creating Helpful Incentives to Produce Semiconductors (CHIPS) Act, the $280 billion legislation is purportedly an attempt to bolster domestic manufacturing and alleviate the U.S. shortage of microchips, which are used in cars, phones, medical equipment, and other everyday electronic devices. Intel congratulated the Senate on its vote, hailing it as a step toward advancing "American leadership in semiconductor manufacturing" and strengthening "American national and economic security." But Sanders (I-Vt.) has repeatedly warned that the bill's $52 billion in subsidies for the microchip industry—as well as its $24 billion in tax credits for semi

Merrick Garland vows to charge 'anyone who was criminally responsible' for January 6th

Image
U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland , gave a rare interview assuring that the Dept. of Justice has not ruled out prosecuting Donald Trump . As some legal experts noted , the former federal judge was clearly responding to increased public frustration and anger over the lack of high-level prosecutions of those responsible for the January 6 insurrection, “We pursue justice without fear or favor,” Garland told NBC News anchor Lester Holt on Tuesday. It is a phrase used by judges perhaps more than prosecutors, and one made popular in 1896 by the publisher of The New York Times. Holt told Garland, “the indictment of a former president, perhaps candidate for president, would arguably tear the country apart,” and asked: “Is that your concern as you make your decision down the road here? Do you have to think about things like that?” READ MORE: Ex-Mueller prosecutor highlights a piece of Trump's Jan. 7 speech that might expose a White House cover-up “Look,” replied Garland, seemin

Donald Trump proposes tent cities to combat homelessness

Image
Former President Donald Trump has a proposal for solving homelessness in the United States, and he shared his vision in a speech at the America First Policy Institute on Tuesday. "Then you look at the tents and the homeless and you think, 'what's happening to this great bastion?' Perhaps some people will not like hearing this, but the only way you are going to remove the hundreds of thousands of people – and maybe throughout our nation millions of people we're talking about, and help make our cities clean, safe, and beautiful again – is open up large parcels of inexpensive land in the outer reaches of the cities," Trump told the right-wing think tank. Pentagon says Donald Trump lied about deploying troops to secure the Capitol

Image
The House Select Committee investigating the January 6 attack on the U.S. Congress on Tuesday released another excerpt of testimony they gathered from former officials in Donald Trump's administration. Speaking to the committee, former acting Secretary of Defense Chris Miller said the former president never requested 10,000 National Guard troops to secure the Capitol prior to January 6. Trump's former chief of staff Mark Meadows claimed during an appearance on Fox News that Trump ordered 10,000 troops to be prepared for violence. “What we also know is that President Trump wanted to make sure that the people that came, that there was a safe environment for that kind of assembly. And I’ve said that publicly before — the 10,000 National Guard troops that he wanted to make sure that everything was safe and secure," Meadows said last year. Trump has also claimed that he had requested 10,000 National Guard troops. "We said to the Department of Defense, the top person

Five ways Democrats could prevail in November: columnist

Image
Midterm elections have been historically unkind to the incumbent majority party. Democrats currently control, albeit narrowly, the House of Representatives, the United States Senate, and the White House. Past trends indicate that Republicans should be poised to reclaim power in one or both chambers of Congress in November. The American political climate in 2022 is unlike any that has come before, however. On Tuesday, Washington Post columnist Paul Waldman wondered whether this year's complex dynamics could give the Democratic Party an edge. Waldman laid out five factors that he believes have the potential to upend tradition. READ MORE: Mike Pence stumps for 'unborn' personhood The GOP's descent into zealotry encompasses the first three of Waldman's points. "Right now the GOP is gripped by two forces that are distinct but operate in concert: an ideological extremism born of backlash politics, and an opposition to democracy that increasingly manifests in

'Manna from heaven': Legal wonks react to fake elector scheme emails

Image
The New York Times reported on Tuesday that previously unknown communications between staff on Donald Trump's campaign revealed the work outside advisers were doing to try and overturn the election. What's being called a "gift to prosecutors" proves both federal and state crimes, according to former impeachment lawyer Norm Eisen on Twitter. In one email, internal advisers admitted that the "alternate slate of electors" were actually "fake electors." Many of the fake electors were subpoenaed by the Justice Department. The details that it was known that the electors were "fake" is "manna from heaven," said former New York Counsel Maya Wiley. It was a sentiment shared by NYU Law School Professor Ryan Goodman. He highlighted the piece of the report that said they'd simply send the "'fake' electoral votes to Pence so that 'someone' in Congress can make an objection when they start counting vote, and
