Viral screenshots of Trump supposedly blaming Biden for lemonade-related deaths are fake

Image
On Friday, screenshots of former President Donald Trump supposedly saying President Joe Biden is to blame for the recent spate of deaths of people who drank Panera's charged lemonade quickly spread on social media. However, those screenshots have been proven to be the work of comedian Keaton Patti , who is a writer for Jimmy Kimmel Live and The Onion. The four screenshots initially tweeted by Patti show the 45th president of the United States giving a campaign speech in Coralville, Iowa, with text below each image. The first screenshot reads: "Everything is bad under Biden. Even the lemonade is killing people. Did you see that? People drink lemonade and die." "The lemonade didn't kill you when I was President," the second screenshot read. "It was tasty and fun to drink. We loved the lemonade, didn't we?" POLL: Should Trump be allowed to hold office again? "We did, but not under Biden. Bacon is more money. Gas is more money. The lemo...

'He will say it’s stolen': DeSantis says Trump will 'delegitimize' GOP primary results if he loses

Image
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis made a jab at former President Donald Trump's penchant for being a sore loser in elections during a campaign event in New Hampshire on Friday. According to the New York Times , DeSantis said if Trump doesn't come in first place on the January 15 Iowa Caucuses or in the New Hampshire primary, the ex-president "will say it’s stolen no matter what, absolutely." "He will try to delegitimize the results. He did that against Ted Cruz in 2016," DeSantis told a reporter in New Hampshire, adding that Trump cried foul "even when 'The Apprentice' didn't get an Emmy." POLL: Should Trump be allowed to hold office again? DeSantis' reference to Ted Cruz stems from the 2016 Iowa Caucuses, which Cruz won by more than 6,000 votes . Following his loss, Trump declared without evidence that the caucuses were fraudulent . "Ted Cruz didn’t win Iowa, he illegally stole it. That is why all of the polls were so wro...

'A disqualifier for anybody': GOP scrambling to find new candidate for swing district after scandal

Image
A swing Ohio House district Republicans were counting on winning to maintain their majority in the House of Representatives next year just became even more competitive. Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio), who has represented her Toledo-area district since 1983, will face a steep reelection campaign in 2024 after the Republican-controlled Ohio legislature carved up her district in the wake of the 2020 Census. In 2022 she faced off against Air Force vetera JR Majewski, who ended up losing after it was discovered he lied about serving in Afghanistan (he actually served in Qatar, which the AP said was " a safe distance from the fighting "). After news of the scandal broke, Kaptur easily won reelection by 13 points . In 2024, the GOP primary will be between Majewski and former GOP state lawmaker Craig Riedel. However, Politico reports that Riedel's candidacy is also in danger due to comments surfacing in which he denigrated former President Donald Trump. This has led Ohio Republ...

'That’s a lot of Cameo recordings': Giuliani roasted on social media after defamation judgment

Image
After former Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani was ordered by an eight-member jury to pay $148 million to two Georgia election workers he defamed, Americans are taking turns ridiculing "America's mayor" on social media. "That's a lot of Cameo recordings!" Mother Jones DC bureau chief David Corn tweeted , referencing the platform celebrities use to charge users to record personal greetings, as expelled former congressman George Santos has done . "If you're doing the math at home, that's $37 million for each of the four landscaping seasons," tweeted journalist Holly Anderson, in a callback to Giuliani's widely mocked press conference in front of Four Seasons Total Landscaping in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the days following the 2020 presidential election. POLL: Should Trump be allowed to hold office again? Following the four-day trial, the Washington, DC jury unanimously awarded both Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss tens of millions of...

Not 'just for the wealthy': New FEC rules allow candidates to pay their own salaries with campaign funds

Image
In a bipartisan vote Thursday, the Federal Election Commission (FEC) approved a rule that will allow federal candidates to pay their own salaries using campaign funds beginning March 1, 2024, CNN reports. Democratic FEC Commissioner Shana Broussard said in a statement that the new rule "will help ordinary, working-class Americans to represent their communities by running for federal office." Per CNN, "Although the FEC has long allowed candidates to use campaign funds to pay themselves a salary, the agency had set strict limits on that compensation to avoid improper personal use of donors' money. In many cases, the salary was tied to their earnings in the year before they became a candidate. Additionally, they could not start drawing a paycheck until the candidate filing deadlines in their states – which vary widely across the country." POLL: Should Trump be allowed to hold office again? Broussard emphasized, "Running for federal office should not be...
