'Substantial evidence' Donald Trump was part of coup plot after Oath Keepers conviction: expert

Image
On CNN Wednesday, former White House ethics czar and House impeachment counsel Norm Eisen broke down the significance of Attorney General Merrick Garland's s peech ahead of the conviction of Oath Keepers leaders in connection with the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. Two of the far-right militia leaders Stewart Rhodes and Kelly Meggs, were convicted of seditious conspiracy, with a litany of other convictions handed down on several other associates. "You have the attorney general, Merrick Garland, here, touting the seditious conspiracy verdict vowing to hold others accountable," said anchor Alex Marquardt. "How much do you think these convictions embolden the Justice Department? What is Garland telegraphing here about upcoming trials?" "I think they embolden the Justice Department a lot," said Eisen. "I've known Merrick Garland over 30 years since we were young lawyers starting out in D.C. This is an unusual victory lap for him. If y

Another GOP 'civil war'? We know how that story ends

Mitch McConnell’s chief skill, above strategic cynicism, is the ability to look deeply concerned about matters of grave consequence. He had his “grave face” on Tuesday. He said: “There is no room in the Republican Party for antisemitism, for white supremacy. Anyone meeting with people advocating that point of view, in my judgment, is highly unlikely to ever be elected president of the United States.” The allusion was to Donald Trump. The criminal former president dined over the weekend with Nick Fuentes and Kanye West, two of the highest profile Jew-haters. (Fuentes is particularly repugnant.) READ MORE: Donald Trump's allies want a chaperone to 'be present with him at all times' after Nick Fuentes dinner The headlines were good for Trump, who needs the antisemite vote, and for the antisemites. Rarely have they gotten as much attention since the days of Charles Lindberg and Father Charles Coughlin. McConnell’s remarks, with those of leading Republicans, seem to sugge

'Coordinated deception': Puerto Rican towns file RICO suit against big oil over climate change denial

Image
A group of 16 Puerto Rican municipalities has sued Chevron, ExxonMobil, Shell, and other fossil fuel giants for alleged violations of the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. The lawsuit , filed last week in federal court and described by plaintiffs as a first-of-its-kind RICO case, accuses Big Oil of colluding to deny the climate-wrecking impacts of their fossil fuel products. As Reuters reported Tuesday: The towns say the companies coordinated a multibillion-dollar 'fraudulent marketing scheme' to convince consumers that fossil fuel products do not alter the climate. That campaign ran contrary to the companies' own studies showing their products accelerate climate change, resulting in more deadly storms, the lawsuit said. The municipalities said the companies outlined a plan of deception in a joint memo that took aim at international climate negotiations in the 1990s. The coordinated deception spanning decades violates U.S. racketeering and antitrus

Justice Department strikes temporary deal to fix Jackson, Mississippi's troubled water system

Image
The United States Department of Justice filed a complaint in court and struck a temporary deal with the city of Jackson, Mississippi on Tuesday to address the water crisis facing its residents. Treatment facility failures and low pressure left hundreds of thousands of people without safe drinking water over the summer. A boil notice was issued on July 29th and lifted on September 15th. “Today the Justice Department is taking action in federal court to address long-standing failures in the city of Jackson’s public drinking water system,” Attorney General Merrick B. Garland said. “The Department of Justice takes seriously its responsibility to keep the American people safe and to protect their civil rights. Together with our partners at EPA, we will continue to seek justice for the residents of Jackson, Mississippi. And we will continue to prioritize cases in the communities most burdened by environmental harm.” The Justice Department explained in a statement that an "Interim T

Scientists revive 'zombie' virus after 50,000 years trapped in Siberian permafrost

Image
As our world continues to warm up, vast areas of permafrost are rapidly melting, releasing material that's been trapped for up to a million years. This includes uncountable numbers of microbes that have been lying dormant for hundreds of millennia. To study these emerging microbes, scientists from the French National Center for Scientific Research have now revived a number of these "zombie viruses" from the Siberian permafrost, including one thought to be nearly 50,000 years old – a record age for a frozen virus returning to a state capable of infecting other organisms. The team behind the study, led by microbiologist Jean-Marie, says these ancient viruses are potentially a significant threat to public health, and further study needs to be done to assess the danger that these infectious agents could pose as the permafrost melts. The researchers warned it may just be the tip of the iceberg: 'One-quarter of the Northern Hemisphere is underlain by permanently froz

'Been to this party too many times': Rick Wilson predicts GOP will nominate Donald Trump in 2024

Image
Long-time GOP strategist, author, and Lincoln Project cofounder Rick Wilson believes that the growing presumption that the GOP will nominate somebody in 2024 other than former President Donald Trump – such as newly reelected Florida Governor Ron DeSantis – is perilously misguided. The party, Wilson warned in a telephone interview with The Guardian published on Sunday, has been through this before. “The greatest danger in American politics is not recognizing that there are great dangers. The same people in 2015 and 2016 were confidently asserting Donald Trump could never, ever under any circumstances win the Republican nomination, and there were never any circumstances where Donald Trump could beat Hillary Clinton , and then he could never have almost a million people die because of his mishandling of Covid and on and on and on and on," Wilson said. “I know that the Republicans who right now are acting very bold and the donors who are acting very frisky – as Trump starts winn

African water conflict threatens security, health, and the environment

Image
Water is a finite resource on our planet. We can only rely on what we have, which translates to about 2.5 percent of drinkable fresh water. Of that amount, only 0.4 percent currently exists in lakes, rivers, and moisture in the atmosphere. The strain of this limited supply grows by the day and as this continues, the detrimental impact will continue to be felt in places least equipped to find alternative solutions—in particular, the African continent. This article was produced by Earth | Food | Life , a project of the Independent Media Institute. The global population is estimated to reach around 9.6 billion people by 2050 . This is triple the number of humans on the planet just a few decades ago, having to exist with the same amount of water, not taking into account the nonhuman animals and plants that also rely on water to survive. More than a third of the planet’s population living without access to clean, safe water live in sub-Saharan Africa. And nearly two-thirds—some four b

The University of California comes to a standstill as academic workers strike

Image
Nearly 50,000 academic workers at the University of California launched a historic strike on November 14 after contract negotiations with their employer failed. Postdoctoral scholars, researchers, trainees, fellows, graduate student instructors, readers, and tutors, who are from 10 UC campuses across the state and are unionized with United Auto Workers , walked out of their jobs. This article was produced by Economy for All , a project of the Independent Media Institute. Such workers are not traditionally associated with militant labor actions as intellectual work has historically been well-compensated in the United States. But, as universities have increasingly adopted corporate models of operation , the same sort of delineation in pay seen in other industries has taken hold in academia, with administrative executives earning top dollar while rank-and-file workers have seen their wages shrink relative to inflation. At the top of workers’ list of demands is better pay , one that i

Keeping global warming under 1.5 degrees Celsius is now practically impossible. But all is not yet lost

Image
The world could still, theoretically, meet its goal of keeping global warming under 1.5 degrees Celsius , a level many scientists consider a dangerous threshold . Realistically, that’s unlikely to happen. This article is republished from The Conversation under a Creative Commons license. Read the original article . Part of the problem was evident at COP27 , the United Nations climate conference in Egypt. While nations’ climate negotiators were successfully fighting to “keep 1.5 alive” as the global goal in the official agreement , reached Nov. 20, 2022, some of their countries were negotiating new fossil fuel deals , driven in part by the global energy crisis. Any expansion of fossil fuels – the primary driver of climate change – makes keeping warming under 1.5 C (2.7 Fahrenheit) compared to pre-industrial times much harder. Attempts at the climate talks to get all countries to agree to phase out coal, oil, natural gas and all fossil fuel subsidies failed. And countries have don
