Maine shooting suspect an Army reservist who liked 'right-wing posts' by Tucker Carlson and GOP: CNN

Robert Card, the 40-year old suspect in Wednesday’s mass shooting in Lewiston, ME, is a U.S. Army Reserves member and “skilled marksman” whose social media presence includes liking “right-wing posts” by Tucker Carlson and “Republican members of Congress,” according to a report from CNN’s Pamela Brown.

A manhunt is currently underway for Card, who police say opened fire Wednesday night at a bowling alley and, separately, at a bar and grill restaurant, killing at least 18 people and injuring more than a dozen. Authorities “obtained an arrest warrant on multiple murder charges in connection to the shootings,” CNN reports, citing Maine State Police Col. William G. Ross.

Brown on Thursday reported extensively on Card’s background, including his social media posts and a recent mental health episode that landed him a stay at “a hospital at the U.S. Military Academy for medical evaluation.”

Card, Brown reports, “was a petroleum supply specialist in the [U.S. Army] Reserves but never served in combat.” Still, he’s described by former colleagues as “a skilled marksman, an outdoorsman who was among the best shooters in his unit,” according to Brown.

“While he was training in upstate New York over the summer, Card reported hearing voices and having thoughts about hurting fellow soldiers, according to law enforcement sources,” Brown reports.

A National Guard spokesman told CNN Card began “behaving erratically” prior to his transport for “medical evaluation.” Card’s family told Brown his behavior is “an acute episode” and “not who he is.”

“On his Twitter page, Card liked right-wing posts including by Tucker Carlson, Donald Trump Jr., Republican members of Congress and multiple posts criticizing President Biden on the economy,” Brown reports.

“His social media also shows photos of him fishing,” and “the coast guard is also part of the search,” according to CNN.
