Experts blast GOP’s plan to end recreational sex: 'You’re gonna love what the Manhattan DA has coming'

Many legal experts took to social media Wednesday to warn that, aside from banning abortion, the GOP has even more plans to govern women's bodies under a second Donald Trump administration.

Lawyers, Guns & Money, in a Tuesday, February 20 blog post titled, "Getting rid of birth control is a key GOP agenda item for the second Trump term," noted The Heritage Foundation, a prominent conservative think tank, is behind Project 2025, the right-wing "playbook for staffing the next Trump administration."

In a September 2023 Politico report, journalist Michael Hirsh explained that through Project 2025, "They aim to defund the Department of Justice, dismantle the FBI, break up the Department of Homeland Security and eliminate the Departments of Education and Commerce, to name just a few of their larger targets. They want to give the president complete power over quasi-independent agencies such as the Federal Communications Commission, which makes and enforces rules for television and internet companies that have been the bane of Trump's political existence in the last few years."

In its blog post, Lawyers, Guns & Money included a May 2023 tweet from the organization – which includes a video of a right-wing activist saying, "It seems to me that a good place to start would be a feminist movement against the pill, & for... returning the consequentiality to sex." The group tweeted, "Conservatives have to lead the way in restoring sex to its true purpose, & ending recreational sex & senseless use of birth control pills."

Several lawyers, journalists and lawmakers also shared the tweet, slamming the Republican foundation's ultimate goal.

Philadelphia Inquirer columnist Will Bunch wrote, "If Democrats can't defeat a party that wants to end recreational sex then I give up."

Conservative lawyer George Conway added, "If you want to restore consequentiality to sex then you’re gonna love what the Manhattan DA has coming up next month"

US Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) Chief of Staff Adam Jentleson tweeted, "the highly influential heritage foundation, which would help staff and direct a future Trump administration, literally said that a key conservative policy goal is 'ending recreational sex.' they said it, not me. IMO we should take them both seriously and literally

Bloomberg columnist Matthew Yglesias said, "This kind of idea is so at odds with Donald Trump’s personal behavior that it’s hard to take seriously, but these are the people who are doing the policy work that he is too lazy for."
