Ex-MAGA staffer says 'spineless' Kevin McCarthy 'could have put Trump through the ropes'

US Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) believed his loyalty to ex-President Donald Trump would secure the House speakership for theCalifornia Republican congressman — and it ultimately did, but not without a fight.

Although McCarthy won his battle to speakership in January of 2023, it was "the first time since 1923 that the House has taken multiple rounds to choose its leader," Atlantic staff writer David A. Graham noted in an article last year.

Not only did it take 15 rounds of votes for the GOP leader to secure the position, McCarthy was ousted from the seat by his congressional colleagues nine months later.

Graham noted:

McCarthy broke from Trump only once, briefly, after the January 6 insurrection, when he privately called Trump’s behavior unacceptable and told members he’d ask the president to resign. (He had reason to be angry at Trump, who had flippantly dismissed his pleas for help that day, saying, 'Well, Kevin, I guess these people are more upset about the election than you are.') But he quickly moved to mend the breach, flying to Mar-a-Lago in late January 2021 to prostrate himself. He also tried to deny his private remarks until reporters produced tapes.

During a conversation with MSNBC's Deadline: White House host Nicolle Wallace Thursday, Anthony Scaramucci, who was Trump White House communications director for 11 days before the MAGA hopeful fired him, took aim at the former speaker's cowardice — blaming McCarthy for Trump's continued success.

Wallace played a clip from former US Rep. Liz Cheney's (R-WY) speech at Iowa's Drake University Wednesday, in which the ex-Wyoming leader reiterated her staunch criticism of Trump and the GOP, saying the party is "currently threatening democracy, and that the nation is undergoing a political shift" because of it, according to the Des Moines Register.

Scaramucci shared Cheney's sentiments, calling out Republicans who, in his view — and in Wallace's — have "failed the country" in their respective roles of leadership.

"Since you're talking about Republicans that have failed the country," Scaramucci said, "let's just mention Kevin McCarthy before you turn to another guest."

He continued, "I mean, this spineless guy, Kevin McCarthy, who I gave money to as a fellow Republican, and I know personally, could have put Trump through the ropes on the 7th of January. He had the votes to impeach him, and roll it into the Senate, and they could have convicted him there, and we would not have to see the likes of Donald Trump."

The former Trump staffer added, "And then we can talk about how we're going to heal the Republican party and re-strengthen our democracy. But because of his profile in cowardice, we're here now. We'll beat him — but it's going to be a tough time this fall. But it just goes to show you the difference between profiles in courage — Liz Cheney — and profiles in cowardice — Kevin McCarthy."
