'Tweeting from his bunker': Dem governor explains why Trump is really 'spooked'

During a Sunday interview with CNN's Jake Tapper, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz explained why he prefers to call Donald Trump "weird" — opposed to "a threat to democracy" like other Democratic leaders.

Walz — who's name appears on 2024 Democratic nominee Kamala Harris' list of potential vice presidential candidates — emphasized his belief that labeling Trump "a threat to democracy" places too much power in the MAGA hopeful's hands.

Speaking with MSNBC's Jen Psaki Monday night, the Inside with Jen Psaki host asked the Democratic governor to elaborate on his point.

"You said, 'We're not afraid of weird people. We're a little creeped out, but we're not afraid," Psaki said to Walz. "I want to get you to expand on that a little bit. There are some scary things that Trump is planning to do. I'm not suggesting you are trying to back away from that. But tell me a little bit more about what you mean by that."

The potential VP nominee replied, "Yeah, he is terrifying. He's going to strip the productive rights. He is going to weaponize the federal government. He's going to put the world at risk. But I think when you have these big things — and I would argue things like homelessness and climate change — if it is an aspiration or a big thing that becomes too scary, people don't know what they can personally do about it, and it gives him a power that he doesn't deserve. This guy's done nothing. He's accomplished nothing. He's never served in the military. He's never been successful at business. He comes out there and says, 'Oh, I send the national guard.' Everyone knows that wasn't true in Minneapolis.

"We watched George Floyd lay down the streets and it was a tough time. He's tweeting from his bunker to shoot people. That's not leadership. That doesn't solve anything. I think you take that away from him by stating the obvious. And people are doing that. You wouldn't hang around this guy. It's just too weird."

"But then, we turn and pivot back to it. What we can do is lead the world in renewable energy. We can create new jobs. And young people are like, 'What are you old folks going to do? Are you going to leave us something we can work with?' And that's why I'm glad they're coming out with and lifting us up. And we need to get it handed off to them, but we need to give them something to do, something that's worth it."

"And I think this guy — he's spooked. Now [the Republicans] are saying 'They're mean to us. These democrats are mean, because they are calling us weird.' I think it was Hillary Clinton who said, 'Well then stop being weird' and we won't call you that. That's a point here. Come up with some good ideas."
