'Are all MAGAs this dumb?' Trump slammed as conservative Ohio gov blames 'internet' for debunked lie

During his presidential debate with Vice President Kamala Harris in Philadelphia on Tuesday night, September 10, former President Donald Trump promoted the racist conspiracy theory that in Springfield, Ohio, Haitian migrants were kidnapping pets — including cats and dogs — and eating them.

Harris and debate moderator David Muir clearly saw that claim as absurd, and Muir said there was no evidence to support it. Yet since the debate, Haitian immigrants in Springfield have feared for their safety — especially in light of bomb threats.

The conspiracy theory has been debunked by Springfield Mayor Rob Rue and Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine, who discussed it during an interview with CBS News.

DeWine, a conservative Republican, said, "This is something that came up on the internet, and the internet can be quite crazy sometimes. Look, Mayor Rue of Springfield says no, there's no truth in that. They have no evidence of that at all."

That interview has inspired a lot of discussion on X, formerly Twitter.

The Atlantic's David A. Graham wrote, "Ah yes, 'the internet,' which is definitely what DeWine means."

Cliff Schecter, CEO of Blue Amp Strategies, tweeted, "Trump, Vance & Jim Jordan...they're a sickness. Eric Swalwell is the antidote to at least one of these a******s."

Software engineer Alex Cole posted, "Ohio Gov. Mike Dewine, a Trump supporter, says Trump is wrong about the Haitian immigrants in Ohio, and the officials in Springfield have no evidence of migrants eating pets there. It all started with a rumor on Facebook."

In a separate tweet, Cole wrote, "Are all MAGAs this dumb?"

Republicans Against Trump noted that DeWine had "debunked Trump's racist lie about Haitian migrants eating pets in Springfield, Ohio."

The Union observed, "Ohio Republican Gov. Mike DeWine says Springfield, Ohio officials 'have no evidence' of Haitian migrants eating pets there, a claim amplified by former President Trump during Tuesday night's debate. Donald Trump lies, and his lies, which could be anything, are very weird."
