'Would you have committed a felony?' Experts mock Vance’s 'illegal and unconstitutional' claim

Donald Trump's running mate, Senator JD Vance (R-OH), on Monday said during a podcast interview that if he were the MAGA hopeful's vice president in 2020, he would not have certified the election on January 6, 2021.

In the video clip shared by the X account "Republicans against Trump," the Ohio lawmaker was asked, "Would you have certified the 2020 election?" Vance replied, "I would have asked the states to submit alternative slates of electors and ask the country to have a debate."

Former US Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY), who officially endorsed 2024 Democratic nominee Kamala Harris on Sunday, replied: Let’s be clear: This is illegal and unconstitutional. The American people had voted. The courts had ruled. The Electoral College had met and voted. The Governor in every state had certified the results and sent a legal slate of electors to the Congress to be counted."

She continued, "The Vice President has no constitutional authority to tell states to submit alternative slates of electors because his candidate lost. That is tyranny. Our institutions held on Jan 6 because Mike Pence refused to violate his oath to the Constitution. Trump picked JD Vance because Vance will do whatever Trump wants, including violating the Constitution. They are both far too dangerous to serve. It’s our duty to stop them.

Former FBI assistant director Frank Figliuzzi said: "To paraphrase: Q: Would you have committed a felony? A: Sure. @JDVance"

The Nevada Independent Editor Jon Ralston commented: "Ask the country to have a debate. My God. Forget the violation of your oath to the Constitution. Imagine being this depraved, this servile, this pathetic. This is why Trump needs to be asked about 2020 tonight and in every interview."

Former New Jersey statehouse bureau chief C. John Schoonejongen added: "I am both amazed and disgusted at the lengths some people will go get and hold on to power. This man has sold his soul for a spot on a national ticket. This is his shame. Sadly, it's ours, as a country, as well."

Michigan State Senator Dayna Polehanki wrote: "Vance is saying if he were VP in 2020 he would have asked ardent Trump supporters in states Trump lost to face felony forgery charges by signing certificates falsely claiming Trump won the state’s electoral votes in an attempt to overturn Trump’s loss. THIS is why Democrats rightly believe that democracy is at stake in this election."
