'They didn't sign up for this': Senator buries Trump over 'higher costs' and 'inhumanity'

Sen. Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.) told Deadline: White House anchor Alicia Menendez that Democrats have nothing but “F” grades for President Donald Trump, even as their own poll numbers continue to sink.

“There's some new polling from ABC News finding that 69% of Americans say the Democratic Party is out of touch with the concerns of most people in the country. Sixty percent say the same of Trump, 64% the same of the Republican party. I wonder, as Democrats, what do you do to counter those numbers?” Menendez asked Kelly.

But the Arizona Senator believed the answer came down to messaging.

“I think we've got to come up with a message that resonates better with the American people. We tend to … talk a lot about a lot of different issues, but when it comes down to it … you’ve got to be focused on the things that people really care about, and that's the price of groceries and gas and housing and healthcare,” Kelly said.

Kelly argued that Trump “is about to destroy the healthcare of potentially millions of Americans,” and he feared his Republican Senate colleagues “might stand there and allow him to do it.” He also marveled that Trump should “really worry people,” but Kelly advised his party to focus on people’s healthcare, finances and their safety while Republicans foment discord among American voters.

A rift is growing between Congressional Republicans and voters on the issues of healthcare and widespread federal layoffs as disgruntled constituents take to town halls to heckle GOP legislators. But while some critics say they are looking forward to the Trump’s administration and his Republican coalition being “more fractious and wracked with infighting” over the next four years, other critics say Democrats’ current tactic of simply waiting for the White House implosion isn’t passing muster.

The top two Hill Democrats, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), are underwater in favorability (20% favorable for Jeffries and 17% favorable for Schumer, his worst rating in CNN polling back to 2017).

Gregory Victorianne, a 65-year-old Los Angelas Democrat demanded Democrats “wake up.”

“They need to put [Trump] in check, put this party in check and let us know in real time what they’re doing so we can stay on top of it and fight and take control of the House, the Senate and the White House again," he said.

Despite Trump’s dismal polls, the public is also evenly split over whether Democratic candidate Kamala Harris would’ve done a better job than Trump, with 42% saying Trump has done a better job than Harris would have and 41% backing Harris, despite Harris making no promise to impose tariffs that have caused havoc and chaos throughout the economy.

The same poll discovered more unity between GOP-aligned adults while those who belong or lean toward the Democratic Party are deeply negative toward their party’s leadership, with 61% disapproving of leadership and just 38% approving.

Kelly said he did not blame voters' for their dissatisfaction, however.

“The American people didn't sign up or vote … to get in trade wars with our allies … they didn't want higher costs, but they're going to see higher costs at the grocery stores," he said. "I don't think they signed up. for one, the inhumanity that we are seeing from this administration and the focus on immigrants living on the interior of this country, some of whom have family here, have kids here, have built lives here, are really being ripped from their communities, many of them without due process."
