'He is not done': Harris responds to Trump’s latest flip-flop on Florida ballot measure

Image
In a matter of 24 hours, former President Donald Trump did a complete one-eighty on an issue that's at the top of the priorities list for some of the most passionate Republican voters. Now, he's doing damage control. On Thursday, Trump told a reporter ahead of a Pottersville, Michigan rally that he would be voting in favor of Florida's Amendment 4 ballot initiative. That ballot question would enshrine abortion rights into the Sunshine State's constitution, and Trump told NBC that he would be "voting that we need more than six weeks," which is the current cutoff for abortions in Florida. However, on Friday — notably after backlash from conservative evangelicals — he then told Fox News ahead of a Pennsylvania rally on Friday that he would not in fact be voting for Amendment 4 . The former president baselessly asserted that the ballot initiative would allow doctors to kill human babies after they're born (which is illegal in all 50 states), saying &quo

Federal judge deals major blow to Trump’s last-ditch effort to delay his sentencing

Image
Former President Donald Trump's legal team is running out of options to delay his September 18 felony sentencing date after a Friday ruling by a federal judge. MSNBC legal analyst Lisa Rubin tweeted Friday evening that U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein (an appointee of former President Bill Clinton) officially denied the Trump team's request to remove his felony hush money cover-up case from Manhattan to federal jurisdiction. While Trump has the option to refile the petition, Rubin noted that he has to do so either with the blessing of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg or from Judge Juan Merchan. So far, he has neither. In an interview with MSNBC host Chris Hayes, Rubin explained that the former president's 11th-hour effort to push back his sentencing date isn't done yet. He still has pending motions before Judge Merchan that may result in either postponing the imposition of a sentence until after the election, or even throwing out the case altogether due

GOP candidate comes out against Trump plan that would cause 'severe recession' in his district

Image
One Republican U.S. House candidate is publicly coming out against one of former President Donald Trump's policy proposals, particularly due to its negative impact on the economy of the district he hopes to represent. According to CNBC , Army veteran and attorney Derrick Anderson is opposed to the ex-president's plan to move roughly 100,000 federal government jobs out of the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area and fire untold scores of public sector workers he describes as "rogue bureaucrats." Anderson told the outlet that he would "oppose any legislation that could weaken national security, raise the cost of living, or hurt VA-7 jobs, regardless of where it comes from." Roughly 60,000 of the workers who would be affected by that policy live in Virginia's 7th Congressional District, accounting for a whopping 15% of its residents. CNBC reported that even more residents of the district are federal government contractors who would also likely be impacte

'Jaw-droppingly crass': Ex-army officer deems Trump 'enemy of everything we fought for'

Image
Since Donald Trump's Monday visit to Arlington National Cemetery, several aspects of the former president's visit to the historic of over 400,000 of US service members have been widely condemned. The Washington Post reported , "Pentagon officials were deeply concerned about the former president turning the visit into a campaign stop, but they also didn’t want to block him from coming, according to Defense Department officials and internal messages reviewed by The Washington Post." In an op-ed published by MSNBC Thursday, former US Army officer Brandon Friedman submits that, "to combat veterans, Arlington National Cemetery has the same power that all holy places have. And that is why Donald Trump’s recent behavior is so repulsive ." Why Trump’s Arlington controversy is actually a crime

Image
It’s not a controversy. It’s a crime. If we don’t say so, we’re complicit. National Public Radio reported Tuesday that two officials from the Donald Trump campaign assaulted a staff member at Arlington National Cemetery. The staffer tried stopping the former president from filming a campaign advertisment in Section 60. That section is reserved for the men and women who died fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. It’s considered by many Americans to be sacred ground. Trump was at Arlington Monday for an event marking the third anniversary of an attack on US military forces as they withdrew from Afghanistan. An emerging theme of his presidential campaign is blaming Joe Biden and Kamala Harris for the 13 Marines who were killed that day by an ISIS suicide bomber outside Kabul Airport. Later, at the behest of two Gold Star families, Trump attended a separate, private ceremony in Section 60 at the headstones of Marine Staff Sgt. Taylor Hoover and Marine Sgt. Nicole Gee. That’s when the “a

New ad puts Trump’s 'direct' influence on 'countless senseless acts of violence' on full display

Image
A new ad released Thursday that warns against Donald Trump's influence on political violence across the country, puts the "stark contrast" between the former president's and Vice President Kamala Harris' rhetoric on display. "Really American" — the grassroots organization behind the ad — shared the video via X, writing: "In stark contrast to Kamala Harris, Trump's own words have been the real and direct cause of countless senseless acts of violence." In the video, viewers can hear Trump saying things like, "I'd like to punch him in the face," and "Knock the crap out of 'em," while Harris can be heard saying, "Violence is never acceptable. We will always speak out against violence, hate crimes and discrimination, where ever and whenever it occurs. It has no place in our democracy." Trump surrogate refuses to disavow RFK Jr’s suggestion COVID was a racial bioweapon

Image
A campaign aide for former President Donald Trump deflected Wednesday over whether the campaign supports conspiracy theories put forth by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Corey Lewandowski refused to give a straight answer when confronted by MSNBC's Ari Melber over whether the campaign stands behind Kennedy's many fringe theories now that the Trump campaign is using him as a surrogate. "I'll remind everyone, RFK Jr. has said that COVID itself was made to target 'both Caucasians and Black people,' that he 'won't take sides on 9/11,' that the CIA controls the American press," said Melber. "How much of this should we understand to be the Trump campaign's position, and can you tell us what role RFK Jr. would play in health policy? We're hearing reports he could be involved in the transition team." "Well, RFK Jr. has been someone who's been very steadfast in making sure that when it comes to the decisions that affect your bod

'More than triple-checked it': Data expert shocked by new Dem voter registration numbers

Image
New York Times reporter Francesca Paris earlier this month noted that "new voter registration data" in Pennsylvania and North Carolina — both battleground states — proves that Vice President Kamala "Harris' candidacy has energized potential Democratic voters." Paris emphasized, "For nearly the entire year, more people had been registering as Republicans than as Democrats when signing up to vote in" the two states, which "use party registration and that release this data regularly." On Wednesday, Tom Bonier, with the data firm Target Smart, shared new numbers with CBS News' Major Garrett, according to Mediate. 'Sickening': Trump post spurs outrage — and new accusations that he broke the law

Image
Donald Trump outraged veterans and legal experts Wednesday with a new social post that they say disrespects U.S. service members who died in the line of duty — and may have violated federal law. Trump posted to TikTok a video montage of his visit Monday to Arlington National Cemetery, where he spurred outrage for a gravesite thumbs-up and possibly broke a law that restricts political campaign activity on military burial grounds. Trump is filmed partaking in a wreath-laying ceremony on the third anniversary of a deadly attack that claimed 13 U.S. service members' lives amid the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021. "We lost 13 great, great people," Trump says in a voiceover. "What a horrible day it was." Trump does not mention President Joe Biden or Vice President Kamala Harris , his political opponent in the upcoming 2024 presidential election, but he appears to draw a comparison between his administration and theirs. 'Especially impressive': Harris campaign fires back at Trump attack with two words

Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign team hit Donald Trump with just two words after the former president railed against the 2024 Democratic nominee — unprovoked — in his latest all-caps Truth Social post. "IT'S ALWAYS FAKE WITH KAMALA," the MAGA hopeful wrote Wednesday. "WE'RE DOMINATING HER ON SOCIAL MEDIA, SO SHE MAKES UP A FAKE LIST OF HER NUMBERS VERSUS MY NUMBERS. Why voting is not the only tool of democratic politics

Image
Now that Robert F Kennedy Jr has dropped out, some of his voters appear ready to move their support over to Jill Stein, the Green Party’s candidate. They say they can’t abide by Kamala Harris’ position on the war in Gaza. If I understand their view correctly, they believe that voting for the Democratic nominee is voting for genocide. I have already explained why I think third-party candidates who are seeking the presidency are scammers. They can’t win. They know they can’t win. And they know they are lying to people when they say they can. But I want to address something else: that third parties give the impression that voting is the only tool of democratic politics. It isn’t. Small democratic politics happens continuously. It’s all around us. It is the force by which normal people are able to make the world a better place. It happens when we voice opinions about this or that issue. It happens when we give money and time to important causes. It happens when together we decid

This GOP congressman's exit is 'a case study in what’s broken in national politics': columnist

Former US Rep. Mike Gallegher (R-WI) was hired last week by the software company Palantir Technologies, after departing Congress earlier this year. In an op-ed published by The Washington Post Tuesday, columnist David Ignatious, who recently interviewed the former GOP lawmaker, explains why Gallagher's exit is "a case study in what’s broken in national politics — and maybe how to fix it." Although "very conservative," Ignatious notes that Gallagher "fears that conservative values aren’t the defining point for Republicans any longer." Grand jury indicts Trump again for J6: If he loses 'he’s going to jail,' expert predicts

Image
A Washington, D.C. grand jury has handed up a superseding indictment against Donald Trump in Special Counsel Jack Smith’s prosecution of the ex-president for election subversion. The indictment, legal experts say, is in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling granting presidents broad immunity for official acts, and appears to remove any narratives or evidence that might be construed as falling under that grant. MSNBC’s Adam Klasfeld, a veteran legal journalist, reports that “Jack Smith’s team says that the superseding indictment was ‘presented to a new grand jury that had not previously heard evidence in this case,’ [and] which separately charged Trump with the same crimes.” Politico’s Kyle Cheney reports the superseding indictment retains “the same four core charges against him for trying to subvert the election.” Effectively, even without the evidence the Supreme Court might have said falls under its new presidential immunity definition, a new grand jury reached the sam

'He says it four times': Experts point out proof Trump 'doesn’t care about free speech'

Image
Political experts are criticizing Donald Trump after the ex-president doubled down on a proposal he made last week, saying that people who burn the American flag should be jailed. MSNBC's Jordan Rubin noted in an article last week: The legal problem with that proposal is that it violates the First Amendment. The Supreme Court addressed the issue in the 1989 case Texas v. Johnson, when conservative icon Antonin Scalia joined the high court majority in deciding that a conviction for burning the flag was unconstitutional. Trump repeated the proposal during his speech at the National Guard convention in Detroit Monday. 'Big donors no longer essential': The 'psychological advantage' Harris has over Trump

Political analyst and former US Senator Claire McCaskill (D-MO) on Monday compared the difference between ex-President Donald Trump's campaign's current need for contributions from "big donors," versus Vice President Kamala Harris'. Speaking with McCaskill, MSNBC host Alicia Menendez pointed to a Sunday article published by Reuters reporting that Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, have raised $540 million since launching last month — "the most ever for any presidential campaign in this time span." He’s out, but scammers like Kennedy will never run out of marks

Image
Robert F Kennedy Jr said this afternoon that he’s ending his so-called independent campaign for president. He’s endorsing Donald Trump. With that announcement, I won’t have to talk about him anymore, thank God, though the need to talk about third parties hasn’t stopped. “I no longer believe that I have a realistic path to electoral victory," Kennedy said today. "I cannot in good conscience ask my staff and volunteers to keep working their long hours or ask my donors to keep giving when I cannot honestly tell them that I have a real path." He never had a path. He’s a scammer. This can’t be said enough. Third parties can’t win. We know this is true, because they never win. The last and only time a third party won was in 1860. A major party had disintegrated and the country was on the brink of civil war. Since then, every single president has been a Republican or a Democrat. But Kennedy – and Jill Stein and Cornel West and the rest – always say there’s a chance, like

'Explicit betrayal of his father’s stated values': RFK Jr.’s cousin rips his Trump endorsement

Image
Prominent conspiracy theorist Robert F. Kennedy Jr. officially suspended his independent presidential campaign on Friday and endorsed former President Donald Trump. His family is now publicly condemning the move as both opportunistic and antithetical to his late father's legacy. In an interview with CNN host Erin Burnett , Stephen Kennedy Smith – who is RFK Jr.'s first cousin — condemned his cousin's decision to endorse the 2024 Republican presidential nominee (the Kennedy family is legendary in Democratic Party politics). He made it clear that the late Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy (who ran for president as a Democrat in 1968 before he was assassinated in June of that year) would not have approved of his son's Trump endorsement. Smith recalled RFK Sr.'s most famous speech after the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was murdered, in which he called for an end to division and hatred. He added that the kind of "violence" and "lawlessness" th

'Climate of fear': Judge rejects Texas AG’s petition to shut down group for criticizing Trump

Image
Texas Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton's attempt to shut down an immigrant rights group for political speech was just thrown out by a Texas judge. According to the Houston Chronicle , Paxton was hoping to have Harris County District Judge R.K. Sandill issue a temporary injunction against the organization FIEL Houston ("Familias Immigrantes y Estudiantes en la Lucha," which translates to "immigrant families and students in the struggle") for alleged "inappropriate political involvement." However, Sandill rejected Paxton's petition on Friday, meaning the group can continue to operate. The Chronicle's Brooke Kushwaha reported that Paxton was hoping to force FIEL Houston to cease operations after the group spoke out against former President Donald Trump, Republican Governor Greg Abbott and the draconian Senate Bill 4 immigration law Abbott signed in 2023 . Houston-based lawyer Christian D. Menefee filed an amicus brief earlier this week

How the Democrats became 'the party of freedom'

Image
Depending on your age, you probably remember when the Republicans owned the meaning of freedom. They fought virtually everything in the name of individual liberty. It didn’t matter how good a government program was, the fact that it was a government program at all meant Americans were less free. And most people, most of the time, agreed. My, my – how things have changed! When the US Supreme Court struck down Roe , it badly undermined the Republicans’ reputation for being “the party of freedom.” But fumbling the ball, to use a football analogy, is one thing. It’s another when the other team picks it up. That’s what happened at the Democratic National Convention last night. Vice presidential nominee Tim Walz ran 95 yards to score. And spiked the ball . When Republicans use the word freedom, they mean that the government should be free to invade your doctor’s office. Corporations — free to pollute your air and water. And banks — free to take advantage of customers. But when we Democ
